well as a French rider living in Austria, i can tell you it is the same in France and Austria! In France, you are not allowed to ride on single trails smaller than 1,2 meter if i'm correct. ( some friends of mine have been chased by Forest police on horses). In Austria, Salzburg Land and Vorhalberg have closed to bike nearly all the good single trails. Not to avoid destruction of the trail, forest or mountain... (as they would say). They don't want bikes "messing up" with pedestrians and because in Austria, every forest is Private and are most of the time Hunting places, You have no choice but to respect this or they'll shoot ;) Dialogue, understanding and evolution in mind's people will change this problem. Well i hope so...

and on flat Pedals!! he was the only one at this time, i do remember everybody including myself were riding DH competitions with clip pedals.

Never meet him, but always sad is the lost of somebody so much appreciated by everyone... For me, mountain biking is not only about riding, it's also about friendship between us, a big family driven by passion and caring for each others... maybe one day i'll have the chance to go to Wisthler and i'll have a big smile on my face riding shores thanks to you.
